It's our annual peek at how an extraordinary gift comes about and is structured. Most such gifts are the result of a collaboration between the donor, their professional advisors and the donee organization. Our program features all three, plus a very special client of the organization who provided the inspiration for the gift.
Missing any of our innovative programming is tough enough, but Anatomy of a Gift comes just once a year. It's like throwing away your Super Bowl tickets*! Don't even think about missing this presentation which will address all these issues and a whole lot of others we simply don’t have room to print!
Sure, you might be able to glean some of this information from the pricey seminar at the Peninsula Hotel in Manhattan (where a Manhattan (or Cosmopolitan) at the bar will set you back at least $15, without gratuity). But we have assembled the best legal, accounting, financial planning and philanthropic minds right here, in the luxurious accommodations of The Children's Museum, and you still have time to make the rest of your morning meetings!
Anatomy of a Gift
An inside look at an incredible gift...
After seeing firsthand how the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired transforms people’s lives, Miami businesswoman Gloria Martin decided to donate $1,104,200.60 to the agency in honor of her good friends, Henry and Inez Stone. The amount commemorates the date of the 11/04/2006 gala celebrating the Lighthouse’s founding 75 years ago. It is the largest donation ever received at the Miami Lighthouse by a living private donor, according to President and CEO Virginia Jacko(http://tinyurl.com/3726l9).

Do you think the terms "Ethics' and "Philanthropy" are necessarily synonymous? Are you aware of the multitude of conflict situations inherent in the planned giving process? Do you think the "free legal advice" you give or facilitate to close a gift will insulate you from liability? You will wish you were fired by Donald Trump* if you even think about missing this presentation which will address all these issues and a whole lot of others we simply don’t have room to print!

Using Statistical Modeling to Increase Donations
Nonprofits are increasingly relying on statistical modeling to help them target their best prospects and strengthen their fundraising programs. Learn how custom modeling provides fundraisers with information about a prospect’s likelihood not only to give, but also to give to the organizations they represent
When is it appropriate to introduce planned giving to a prospect? Should you be “marketing” planned gifts? What is the difference between a major gift program and a planned gift program? In this session, join former hospital foundation executive and fundraising consultant, Cary Colwell to discuss how to use planned giving as a tool and how to segment your donor/prospect base in order to identify prospects. We will also explore when it is appropriate to seek a current gift vs. a planned gift. Is your development program as efficient as it could be? Are you using statistical modeling instead of flipping a coin or opening a fortune cookie? Of course not! But "out of town* expert" Cary Colwell (bio below) will take the mystery out of identifying prospective donors. How do we do it? Who cares! Just hurry up and register before our Budget & Finance Committee finds out! You will see the and make threatening gestures at Chris Wallace in disgust if you even think about missing this presentation which will address all these issues and a whole lot of others we simply don’t have room to print!
Cary Colwell is a consultant in the Blackbaud Analytics division. He has 25 years of fundraising experience and has raised hundreds of millions in private support. Previously, he served as president and CEO of the Scripps Foundation for Medicine and Science in San Diego, CA, where he was responsible for the overall operations of the Foundation, one of the nation’s top 25 fundraising organizations for private medical institutions. Previously, Mr. Colwell served as executive director of the Memorial Medical Center Foundation in Springfield, IL, and was corporate director of planned and major gifts at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI. His background also includes major and planned giving work in higher education. He holds a BS in finance from Eastern Illinois University.

On August 17, the President signed the Pension Protection Act of 2006. The new law contains numerous changes to the tax law provisions affecting tax-exempt organizations. Do you know the new law's effect on:
-
Donor advised funds, supporting organizations, and credit counseling organizations
-
Unrelated business income and Section 501(c)(3) organizations
-
Charitable contribution deductions for monetary donations, certain easements, taxidermy property, clothing and household goods, and other items
-
An incredible opportunity to convert tax vulnerable IRAs into transformative donations

Developing a successful planned giving program can be a complex undertaking. But it is one that is well worth the trouble. Extensive research has shown that planned giving is about lifestyles and loyalty, not wealth. Many organizations still think they have to find the millionaires in their database to secure planned gifts. The truth: everyone in your annual fund program has the potential to be a planned giver. This means you have more control over the process than you think. Equipped with solid information and the right marketing strategy, your organization can build a successful planned giving program.
All this on one action packed program? All delivered by our first "out of town expert" who really is from out of town! How do we do it? Who cares! Just hurry up and register before our Budget & Finance Committee finds out!

What happens in Washington never stays in Washington! Both the House and Senate are moving on comprehensive legislation to substantially increase oversight of exempt organizations. When Congress decides to focus on something, it can only mean one thing! (if you're an IRS agent monitoring our programming) - the fair and equitable administration of our tax laws! (if you're connected with the operation of a nonprofit) - watch out!
Learn the answers to these burning questions!
-
what does "SOx" stand for and why do exempt organizations need to be concerned about it?
-
what did the American University and American Red Cross do to get U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (IA), Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, so riled up?
-
will your exempt organization be required to submit to annual audits?
-
will your exempt organization be required to reapply for tax exempt status?
-
what is your exempt organization doing to endanger its tax exempt status?
-
what is your exempt organization doing to subject your board and professionals to sanctions?
Learn what's coming down from the beltway so you can focus on your organization's vision and mission!

Gift Planning? But this is an Emergency!
Sam Tidwell, Chief Executive Officer American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys
This program will address how an agency, like the American Red Cross, undertakes building its planned giving program, while at the same time facing the continuous need of fundraising in times of emergency. Sam Tidwell will discuss the balancing that is done between the "assets now" demands on the agency and deferred giving. The program will also discuss how the American Red Cross' emergency mission supports a case for planned giving and how this works in the "real" world.
These same issues are now confronting the broad spectrum of nonprofits in the wake of various emergencies. How does this paradigm shift change the way our nonprofits do business? How must nonprofits plan differently to reach their annual fundraising goals and their planned giving goals?

Presentation and Panel, Moderated by Jennifer Tisthammer
Did you know that women may now be designating a greater percentage of their incomes and assets to philanthropy than many men? More so than their male counterparts*, they take an active role in their own philanthropy, and are using their financial power to effect change. This difference is important for nonprofits to understand. Jennifer Tisthammer, former VP and Senior Philanthropic Consultant for Merrill Lynch’s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Management, will moderate the panel. Panel guests include Jane W. McMillan, Stokes McMillan & Maracini P.A.; Laurie Sallarusso, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity, Broward; and Evelyn Cohan, a local philanthropist. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn ways to bring women donors closer to your organization
